CD cover analysis

Lillix

The style of the band is quite unique and old fashioned which makes a statement about them. They do not want to be mainstream and would rather focus on their music and their fans. The shadow over their faces is a constant theme throughout the music video, which illustrates the lyrics and the meaning of the song as it is about hiding behind a farce and pretending to be someone you’re not.

The looks on their faces at the same time is provocative suggesting that they are popular with the male audience as well because of their looks. They have changed their appearance because now they are more iconographic of the pop genre through the glamorous, girly clothes they wear where as before they wore down to earth, plain clothes that was more iconographic of the rock genre. Their make up is quite subtle and old fashioned where as before it was more smouldering and heavy, iconographic of the rock genre.

The title of the band is big and goes across the screen, drawing attention to it so that the audience can identify the band. It is black and bold also for this purpose. The title is repeated twice to stand out but also to make it look quite rough and edgy. The colour of the CD cover informs us that the target audience of the band are girls. The cover is quite girly but at the same time is sophisticated in the graphics that are used. The way that the cutting out of the heads is quite jagged and rough implies that the band too is like that. They are not your usual girly pop band.

The body language on their faces is quite firm suggesting that they are independent. Their eye contact invites the audience to connect with them, allowing fandom to take place. The rough, rustic look of the cover implies that they are not the usual girl, pop band but have more of an edge. The black line of spots over the cover makes it look more rustic and unique and makes the cover stand out more.

Pussycat Dolls

The girls are all lined up together to present to the audience the band. They are smiling which invites the audience to have contact with them, as well as the way that they have eye contact with the camera. The way they are smiling is friendly and represents them as happy, bubbly people. The use of eye contact allows fandom to happen. The CD cover is posed and by having them standing to side and turning their heads, it is trying to show their innocent side. However, the way that the two girls to the left hand side are posed suggests they are being provocative and a little bit teasing towards the males. The Pussycat Dolls are notorious for their sex appeal and this comes across on their CD cover.

The clothes they are wearing represent the Pussycat Dolls as unique. They are not the stereotypical clothes for the R ‘n’ B or pop genre as they are not glamorous. Instead they are unique in the way they are unusual. The colours of the clothes compliment each other and each Pussycat Doll has a different style. Some of the girls have unique hairstyles that also give the impression that they want to be different and not the stereotypical girl band. They give the sense they want to be a girl band for older teenage girls yet still appeal to the younger ones.

The girls are dressed quite provocatively which appeals to the male audience although primarily the target audience is young, teenage females. This is shown through the girlyness of the CD cover; the clothes, the smiles, the colours. The title is almost in rainbow colours which represents the different personalities and identities of the band, how each Pussycat Doll is different. The title is placed at the top so that it catches their target audience’s attention. The PCD at the end is their logo and so it is big so that that the audience can identify it.

The background of the CD cover is black which gives it a sophisticated feel rather than a teenage girl feel. There is not a lot of pink or purple that would appeal to younger girls. The black with the light in the back is like a stage and it is as though they are presenting themselves on stage to the audience. The girls of the Pussycat Dolls give the sense they are close in the way that they are all lines up with one another. And although it is obvious they have been placed on top of each other, two are almost hugging each other, giving this sense.

The Kooks

The black and white theme of this CD cover is plain and simple yet sophisticated. It is a convention of the indie genre as the majority of CD covers are simple and do not have a lot of graphics. This is also true of the music videos that they produce. The images of the band playing their instruments suggest that the band is very much about their music rather than fame. This is also true about their music videos as from them we get the sense that they are focussed on their music. The use of acoustic guitars gives them a unique feel as the stereotypes of bands these days are that they use electric guitars. It suggests that they enjoy playing their music and have a softer side rather than a heavy side to music.

The way that the band seem to be equal, by the positioning of them on the front cover, suggests that they are all equally important in their music. The cover is also male orientated and has male connotations through the use of black and white and instruments, not normally associated with females. The clothes they are wearing are down to earth and are representing themselves as unique yet normal. The look they have is unique in the way that they have big, curly hair rather than a fashionable, clean cut haircut.

The way that the title is positioned on the front cover catches their target audience’s, males in their late teens, attention. The positioning also is like the title is going in and then coming out of something, which is the name of the album. The colour red is used to make it stand out to the audience. The white background of the cover gives it a clean, simple look which is what the indie genre tries to create. CD covers for the indie genre are either simple or unique and abstract. The way that the band are looking down at their instruments also imply to the audience that they are focussed on their music and spend their spare time practicing and ‘jamming’.

Websites Analysis

Girls Aloud

The Girls Aloud website is very girly in the sense that it is very pink and purple. However, there is a slight sophistication to it through the use of black and metallic. There is a large picture of the band on the top of the screen so that the audience can identify the band. The picture of the band is of them looking serious with eye contact. The eye contact allows the audience to feel they have contact with the band, allowing fandom to take place. The way that they are not smiling suggests that they are not only trying to reach a target audience of young girls but also of older teenage girls.

The homepage has an automatic start media player which begins to play the latest music video of the band. This allows the audience to be interactive and watch it. It is also done to promote their new single so that the audience is aware there is one. The pages on the website are The Girls allowing the audience to gain intimate knowledge of the band members so that they feel they know them. A gallery and diary, again allowing them to connect with the band and feel as though they are special because they know about them and know what they are up to through the diary. The GA style, GA club and GA games is a definite sign that the band are becoming huge parts of the target audience’s lives, affecting the way they dress etc. Also the club allows the audience to feel speacial, making them feel part of the band and making them feel like big fans. The chat page allows them to talk to other people of the same interests, allowing a fanbase to evolves. The mobile and download pages again shows the band are heavily influencing their target audiences lives, not only are they dictating the way they should dresss, but they are also becoming evolved on their computers and mobile phones.

Lillix

The front page of the webpage of Lillix is a big picture of the band looking posed. Two band members have eye contact with the camera allowing fandom to take places and allowing the target audience to have contact with the stars. The band looks glamorous yet casual representing them as down to earth. The different hair colours and the way that each band member has a different style, gives the sense that each band member is unique and has a different personality and identity.

The black background makes the site look sophisticated and also conforms to the rock-pop genre in the way that it is dark. The title of the band is the biggest text and is at the bottom so that it catches the target audience’s eye and that they know they are on the right website. On the homepage there is a news box where the latest news about the band, such as the release of a new single or the dates for an upcoming tour are published so that the target audience can quickly find and absorb it.

The pages that are available on the website are; information which allows the audience to find out about the band and the bandmembers. It allows them to gain intimate knowledge of the band and their backgrounds and past so that they feel they have connected with the band. There is also a media page which allows the audience to watch music videos and video diaries, again allowing the audience to find out more and feel as though they have connected with the band. A gallery page and a forum pages, allowing the taregt audience to talk with people with a similar interest allowing a fanbase to evolve. A store which allows brand loyalty in the way that the audience can buy merchandise such as T-shirts, mugs, calendars through their like of the band. A contact and myspace page is present so that fans can contact the band and feel they have connected with them. They can also add them on myspace, again allowing brand loyalty.

Usher

The website opens with a trailer for his new album which makes the audience watch it and be aware that he has a new album, ultimately making them want to buy it. The fact that it is played before the audience has even got onto the website shows how they are trying to make the audience absorbed with this information. The way that the webpage is called UsherWorld, again shows how they are trying to absorb the audience with Usher information. There is an advert at the bottom of the page for his new album, promoting it to the audience so that they go out and buy it.

The homepage is red, the same red that is on his album. They same rough affects have been used that were on his album. His album is marketed as a story of his life and how he used to be rough and how he has developed, hence why there is the rough graphics used. There is a large photo of him, allowing the audience to identify him. It is posed and is of him looking determined, again how he has developed. He is wearing designer clothes and look glamorous which like his album, showing what he has achieved in his life.

The pages on the website are news which is also on the homepage so that the audience can read the latest news about their favourite artist. The target audience for Usher is predominantly female and male teenagers of the age 15-22. His website is sophisticated to appeal to the target audience. There are no pages about Usher or photos as this is not what the target audience are interested in, they are more interested in his music. There is a page for the trailer, again promoting his new album and a page to sign up for updates. This allows the target audience to receive news before anyone else so that they feel special and can be up to date. There is a video page so that the audience can watch the videos and be familiar with them. There is a New Look page which promotes his community project, allowing the audience to see that he is giving back to the community now he is rich and famous. Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin has identified key features in a music video which applies to all music videos. There features that distinguish the music video as a form:

There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. this visuals can either illustrate, amplify or contradicts the lyrics.

There is also a relationship between the music and the visuals. These visuals again either illustrate, amplify or contradict the music.

Music genres can have their own music video style and iconography. For example live stage performances in heavy rock.

There will be a demand from the record company for a lot of close ups of the artist or vocalist. This is so they can create fandom, allowing the audience to connect with the artist and stay loyal to them.

There are references to voyeurism, especially n the treatment of females. There will also be voyeurism in the terms of systems of looking for example screens within screens, binoculars, cameras etc.

It's likely to be intertextual references to either other music videos or to films and TV texts.

Focus Group

I have formed a focus group with 6 girls aged 15-19 so that they can help me make decisions regarding my music video. I have asked girls of this age as these are my target audience and it is the type of song they usually listen to. Whenever I need to make a decision on what frame to use, what actress, what setting etc. I will ask them because they will help me make the right decision so that my music video appeals to my target audience.

After showing them my animatic they said they liked the song because it was catchy and upbeat. They said it was a good song to choose, as my target audience would like it. They also said that it was a good choice because it is fairly unknown which would mean my target audience would not compare it to its original video. They said my narrative was a good one and they liked my idea of having a frame of a magazine so that they could easily identify what the narrative is about. They also like the way my music video ends. When I asked them if it mattered if I had a drum kit or not in the performance section, they said not really as they prefer to watch the narrative than the performance.

Target Audience

The target audience of my music video is teenage girls of the age 15-19. It is rock-pop and will appeal to girls who are interested in music. They like to go out with their friends and have fun. They like upbeat pop music.

Questionnaire Results

From my questionnaire results I have chosen to produce a music video for a girl pop band that will consist of a narrative and a performance. I think it is important that I have these two aspects in my music video, as it is what my target audience wants. The channels I will air my music video will be on is TMF, MTV hits and MTV2, as I believe that my target audience will be able to watch it. I will keep the narrative simple so that my target audience will enjoy watching it and understand it.
